PLANtation Profit Planner™ computer program (version 2) is a Windows based program designed to help agricultural producers make investment decisions. Profit Planner™ can evaluate an array of possible short-, medium-, and long-term investments. Short-term investments may include applying chemicals to off-set inputs, such as labour, or increase crop quality, or yield. Medium-term investments could include technologies that increase efficiencies, reduce inputs, or increase yields. Examples of longer-term investments are whether to keep an existing orchard or planting a new perennial crop with an economic life of 20 plus years.

Profit Planner™ uses previously generated enterprise budgets to establish a base from which you can analyze the potential profitability and feasibility of investments up to a 20-year period. A single plan can be evaluated or two cropping systems can be compared at the same time.

A unique feature included Profit Planner™ is that it allows you to inflate individual costs and return items and discounts annual net returns back to their present value. In a Profit Planner™ present value analysis, all values are expressed in terms of current prices for the present time. This means that all net returns are discounted to the present time and all prices must be inflated from the present time, which is year 0.

Each Profit Planner™ scenario requires you to import annual budget files. All assumptions in these budgets as to prices received, yields obtained, or input items, amounts, costs and inflation rates can be readily changed in the budgets provided with Profit Planner™ or the user can start with blank budgets and develop a set of annual budgets that most fit his/her situation. Profit Planner™ uses the economic concepts of net present value, annual equivalence, and internal rate of return to analyze the potential profitability of a given investment. Profit Planner™ also analyzes the financial feasibility of a potential investment by generating annual net cash flows.

Profit Planner™ generates three reports to assist in your investment decisions. “Net Returns and Present Value by Year” gives the net returns and net present value by year and the total net returns and total net present value for each plan along with the annual equivalent. “Accumulated Net Returns” shows the annual returns, annual cost, net returns, and accumulated net returns for each plan. It calculates the year annual returns are greater than annual costs, the year returns are greater than total costs of all previous years, and the total cash costs to execute an investment. “Net Present Value Profile” calculates the net present value and the annual equivalent at various interest rates to give the internal rate of return for each plan. Profit Planner™ also graphs the changes to annual returns and costs between the two plans, net returns by year, accumulated net returns by year, and the net present value and the annual equivalent at varying discount rates.

Understanding the importance implementing business strategies in agriculture with sound financial management is crucial. The importance of gaining a better understanding of financial management techniques and tools can never be over emphasized. In current economic times, agribusinesses are faced with increasing financial, production, marketing, and human resource risks, such as interest rate volatility, reduced availability of credit, rising labor costs, and technological changes affecting cropping systems and livestock enterprises. The success of agribusinesses in today’s economic environment is directly related to their ability to use and understand financial management concepts and tools.

The PLANtation Business Planner™ computer program (version 1) is a Windows-based program designed to help agricultural producers make investment decisions based on their financial liquidity, solvency, profitability, and efficiency of the farm or ranch business. After a Business Planner™ analysis has been created, investments in technology, conservation practices, value-added processes, or changes to cropping systems or livestock enterprises can be added to or deleted from the current farm and ranch operation. Changes to a business’ financial ratios and performance measures will also be calculated.

Business Planner™ uses previously generated scenario files from Profit Planner™ as the foundation for annual returns and cash costs for each block, field, or business enterprise on a farm or ranch. By inserting asset and liability information from a balance sheet, depreciation and replacement costs, and family withdrawals, Business Planner™ generates 18 financial ratios and performance measures for up to 10 years. All assumptions in these scenario files as to prices received, yields obtained, or input items, amounts, costs and inflation rates are created specifically for the farm or ranch operation and cannot be changed in Business Planner™.

Business Planner™ generates four reports to assist in your investment decisions. “Cash Flow by Block and by Year” gives the net returns for each year by block entered in a Business Planner™ analysis. This report shows which fields, crops, blocks, livestock enterprises, etc. are contributing to the fixed costs of the business and those that may need to be replaced or improved upon. “Farm/Ranch Net Income” shows the gross income, annual costs, annual net incomes, and accumulated net incomes for the whole farm or ranch. “Farm/Ranch Net Income” also shows the trends for annual gross incomes, costs and net incomes for the farm and ranch business. The “Balance Sheet Information” shows the assets, liabilities and net worth of the farm and ranch business for up to 10 years. The “Financial Ratios and Performance Measures” shows the 18 financial ratios and performance measures and ratios necessary to evaluate the farm and ranch business. Business Planner™ also graphs the net incomes and accumulated net incomes by year, financial ratios and performance measures, and the businesses assets and liabilities.
